Graduate Certificate in Gender Studies

This certificate draws upon the expertise of the faculty in women and gender studies as well as the program’s 100 affiliated faculty at Arizona State University. Graduate students have the opportunity to enhance their advanced degrees with demonstrated proficiency and knowledge about gender research and theories that they may then apply in their own fields. All students enrolled in a graduate program at Arizona State University may earn this certificate, which requires a total of 15 credit hours (five courses).  No more than 40% of coursework towards the requirements of a graduate certificate can be completed prior to admission to the certificate program.

Cultural and social constructions of masculinity and femininity shape the labor force, the economy and social institutions including the family, government, media and the arts, and civil society. Understanding the social dimensions of gender will enhance students’ educational and working opportunities in areas such as policy, health, urban planning, business, education, international development, design, sciences, media and the arts.

The certificate will provide students with a foundation in interdisciplinary research in the study of gender, and with opportunities to focus on specific areas of gender research through the many graduate courses in gender and women’s studies offered throughout the university.
