Doctor of Philosophy in Gender Studies
The doctoral program in gender studies was officially approved by the Arizona Board of Regents on Jan. 15, 2008. The Women and Gender Studies Program at ASU is one of the largest and most vibrant in the United States. Located in the Phoenix metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing urban centers in the United States, it offers students the opportunity to study in the geographically-diverse and culturally-rich landscape of the Southwest.
Our gender studies curriculum is designed to provide students with the interdisciplinary training in theory and methods needed to create original research and scholarship about gender. The degree requires 84 credits, and at the core of the program are four required courses:
- Critical concepts of gender.
- Mapping the intersections of gender.
- Engendering methodology.
- Research design and development.
Students also take two research methods courses relevant to their dissertation plus additional courses in one of our three areas of specialization:
- Health, science and technology.
- Justice, social change and sustainability.
- Visual and narrative culture.
Application deadline for fall admission is Jan. 15. Priority will be given to students who complete their applications by the Jan. 15 deadline. Applications will be reviewed only when complete.

Graduate Certificate in Gender Studies
This certificate draws upon the expertise of the faculty in women and gender studies as well as the program’s 100 affiliated faculty at Arizona State University. Graduate students have the opportunity to enhance their advanced degrees with demonstrated proficiency and knowledge about gender research and theories that they may then apply in their own fields. All students enrolled in a graduate program at Arizona State University may earn this certificate, which requires a total of 15 credit hours (five courses). No more than 40% of coursework towards the requirements of a graduate certificate can be completed prior to admission to the certificate program. Graduate Certificate Information
