Overview: Doctor of Philosophy in Gender Studies
The Doctor of Philosophy program in gender studies was officially approved by the Arizona Board of Regents on Jan. 15, 2008. The Women and Gender Studies Program at ASU is one of the largest and most vibrant in the United States. Located in the Phoenix metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing urban centers in the United States, it offers students the opportunity to study in the geographically-diverse and culturally-rich landscape of the Southwest.
Our gender studies curriculum is designed to provide students with the interdisciplinary training in theory and methods needed to create original research and scholarship about gender. The degree requires 84 credits, and at the core of the program are four required courses:
- Critical concepts of gender.
- Mapping the intersections of gender.
- Engendering methodology.
- Research design and development.
Students also take two research methods courses relevant to their dissertation plus additional courses in one of our three areas of specialization, for a total of :
- Health, science and technology.
- Justice and social change
- Visual and narrative culture.
We are an intellectually and culturally diverse faculty with expertise in many topics including sexuality, race, labor, science and technology, health, globalization, visual culture, historical and literary narrative, and social change. Our faculty address compelling issues such as gender disparities in health, the quest for equitable and socially sustainable communities, and the ways in which diverse communities articulate gender through visual and material cultures. Our course of study combines core courses offered by faculty in the Women and Gender Studies Program as well as courses offered by affiliate faculty from more than 20 departments at ASU.
Competitive graduate fellowships and teaching and research assistantships may provide tuition grants, stipend and health benefits.
Application deadline for fall admission is Jan. 15. Priority will be given to students who complete their applications by the Jan. 15 deadline.
