OVERVIEW
Doctoral Program in Gender Studies at Arizona State University
The Ph.D. Program in Gender Studies was officially approved by the Arizona
Board of Regents on January 15, 2008. The Women and Gender Studies Program at ASU is one of the
largest and most vibrant in the United States. Located in the Phoenix
Metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing urban centers in the United
States, it offers students the opportunity to study in the geographically
diverse and culturally rich landscape of the Southwest.
Our Gender Studies curriculum is designed to provide students with the
interdisciplinary training in theory and methods needed to create original
research and scholarship about gender. At the core of the program are four
required courses: Critical Concepts of Gender; Mapping the Intersections
of Gender; Engendering Methodology; and Research Design and
Development. Students also take two research methods courses relevant to
their dissertation plus additional courses in one of our three areas of
specialization:
- Health, Science and Technology
- Justice, Social Change, and Sustainability
- Visual and Narrative Culture
We are an intellectually and culturally diverse faculty with expertise in
many topics including sexuality, race, labor, science and technology,
health, globalization, visual culture, historical and literary narrative,
and social change. Our faculty address compelling issues such as
gender disparities in health, the quest for equitable and socially
sustainable communities, and the ways in which diverse communities
articulate gender through visual and material cultures. Our
course of study combines core courses offered by faculty in the
Women and Gender Studies Program (WGS) as well as courses offered by affiliate
faculty from over 20 departments at ASU.
Application details can be found on our website, at
wgs.asu.edu/students/index.html. Students
must submit
three letters of recommendation from academic sources, a resume or CV, a
statement of purpose, one writing sample, transcripts from all previous

equivalent and relevant research experience. The program will consider
students entering with either a BA or MA/MS. Following admission, those

coursework to determine if they can receive credit for equivalent
courses.
Competitive graduate fellowships and teaching and research assistantships
may provide tuition grants, stipend and health benefits.
